Somebody Says Sorry So It Will Stop
The fight itself took twenty minutes.
The aftermath takes the next two days.
One of you apologizes fast, just to end it.
Or you both find reasons to stay busy at opposite ends of the house.
Or the silent treatment moves in, and the house goes quiet.
A sentence you haven’t said to anyone keeps getting louder:
I CAN’T stand it anymore.
The Quiet Eats What Joy Is Left
You’ve both tried making up, with apologies and promises and a nice dinner once things thaw.
Each round leaves a little less behind.
Dinner got quieter.
Nobody reaches for a hand in the car anymore.
Even a good weekend comes with a guard up.
This isn’t working for either of you, and you both know it.
Love that’s still there deserves better than days of silence.

Why the Silence Outlasts the Fight
Apologizing, avoiding, going quiet: each one is a way out of the pain, fast.
None of them reaches the hurt that set the whole thing off.
So it stays put, and it’s waiting when the next small thing sets you both off.
Couples therapy slows things down enough to find that hurt and put words to it, together.
What Happens in the Room With Us
Couples sessions run up to an hour and a half, long enough for a hard conversation to cool and land. Expect plain talk, honest pushback, and room for a laugh.
- Cool down and collect yourself before the fight takes over
- Catch the trap before either of you falls in
- Say what actually got hurt, in words your partner can hear
- Reprioritize what each of you needs from the other now
- Shorten the stretch of silence after a hard night
Making up can become something the two of you do together.
Couples Therapy Helps You Heal Together in Three Phases
- 1
Know the Problem
We start with what the fights are really about and who each of you is. Trust with us, and with each other, gets built here first.
Both of you get heard first.
- 2
Come to Terms
Some differences between you are here to stay. Accepting them is where the two of you begin to heal together.
You heal together, as you are.
- 3
Build a New Us
Neither of you is who you were at the start. So we build a new us, a more mature version of the couple you are now.
Grown-up love, built together.
Why Straight Talk is Better
A Male Couples Therapist, Rare Around Here
Our founder, Andy Lapides, is a male couples therapist, and that can make it easier for a reluctant partner, sometimes the husband, to walk in.
Watching More Than the Words
Andy notices tone, posture, and who leans in or pulls back, and he names what he sees so both of you can see it too.
Straight Talk for Both of You
Andy wants each of you to show up as yourself with no act required, and he'll hold both of your feet to the fire with a teacher's patience.
Meet The Morris Guild of Psychotherapy
We’re a small group practice in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey, founded by Andy Lapides, MSW, LCSW, BCD. Andy has done this work for more than 20 years and spent about eight of them on the Rutgers faculty, training new therapists.
Andy also lived a version of the difficult-parent story himself, so you won’t spend your sessions educating him.
Alyson O’Neill works with young adults and older teens.
Every person who walks in here gets seen, heard, and accepted exactly as they are. That part is nonnegotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions
At home, a fight runs at full speed with nobody watching the pattern. Here we slow it down, find what actually got hurt, and give you experiments to try between sessions.
Plenty of couples start that way. Your partner is welcome to make the free fifteen-minute call first, ask us anything, and decide after that. Whoever walks in unsure gets heard as fully as the one who called.
Andy Lapides, MSW, LCSW, BCD, our founder, with 20+ years in the field and about eight years training new therapists on the Rutgers faculty. He’s board certified in clinical social work and trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples.
It varies, and progress comes in small steps with some slipping back along the way. Over time, couples often find the defensiveness goes way down, with maybe a blip now and then.
That’s useful, honestly, because we get to see it up close. We’ll help you both cool down and collect yourselves, then look at what set it off.
